Islas Espíritu Santo and Partida

Isla Espíritu Santo and Isla Partida are islands in the Gulf of California, located offshore Baja California Sur, Mexico. Both islands are uninhabited and were once connected, but are now separated by a small canal. Despite pressure from real estate developers to construct a resort on Espíritu Santo, the two islands have been part of a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve since 1995.
Fires in Southern Turkey

Multiple wildfires have scorched Southern Turkey over the past week, burning as much as 250,000 acres so far. That's nearly the total area of Hong Kong. This Overview shows smoke and charred forests near the Manavgat Dam, roughly 45 miles (72 km) east of Antalya. Wildfires are common in this region during the summer months, but this year’s fire season is Turkey’s worst in a decade. At least eight people have been killed as the fires continue to spread through villages and coastal vacation resorts.
Qurayyah IPP

Qurayyah IPP is a large, gas-fired combined cycle power station in Qurayyah, Saudi Arabia. It is one of the largest plants of its kind in the world by capacity, operating at 3,927 megawatts. Qurayyah is located on the Persian Gulf in Saudi Arabia’s Eastern Province, which contains a majority of the kingdom’s oil and gas fields.
Bootleg Fire

The Bootleg Fire in southern Oregon is the largest active wildfire in the United States, having burned more than 410,000 acres (1,660 square km) in the past three weeks. This Overview shows the blaze on July 9th, just a few days after it was sparked by lightning on July 6th. More than 2,220 workers have managed to contain roughly 53% of the fire, yet at least 160 homes have been destroyed and another 2,000 residences are under evacuation orders.
Deforestation in Bolivia

Deforestation is visible in Santa Cruz, Bolivia immediately next to a relatively untouched section of rainforest. Deforestation in the country has primarily been driven by the expansion of mechanized agriculture and cattle ranching. Between 2001 and 2020, Bolivia lost more than 15 million acres (6.1 million hectares) of tree cover — an area twice the size of Belgium. More than 40% of this loss occurred between 2016 and 2020.

Check out this incredible shot of a cargo ship in Kronstadt, Russia, passing through frozen waters of the Gulf of Finland. Located on Kotlin Island, the city of Kronstadt is linked to the mainland via the St. Petersburg Dam, a 16-mile long (25 km) combination levee-causeway-seagate. The record low temperature in this part of Russia is −35.9°C (−32.6 °F).
Flooding Damage in Schuld, Germany

The town of Schuld, Germany, suffered widespread devastation when the Ahr River overflowed its banks during severe rains last week. Flooding damage was widespread throughout Western Germany and the surrounding countries, with high waters inundating towns, collapsing bridges and homes, and causing the deaths of nearly 200 people.

Raung Volcano

Raung towers more than 10,000 feet above sea level and was captured here during a powerful eruption in 2015 with a short-wave infrared satellite camera. Yangon, Myanmar

Also known as the Yangon or Rangoon River, this waterway drains into the Andaman Sea and is navigable by ocean-going vessels, giving it a critical role in the economy of Myanmar. The river has also helped Yangon grow into the largest city in the nation, with an urban population of about 5.1 million.
Nissan Smyrna Assembly Plant

Hundreds of vehicles sit on a lot at the Nissan Smyrna Assembly Plant in Smyrna, Tennessee. This facility covers nearly 1.4 square miles (3.6 square km) and has an annual capacity of 640,000 cars — more than any other automobile assembly plant in North America. Many of the vehicles seen here are covered with a white plastic film to protect their finish from dust, dirt or other damage in transit.

Capital Hill

The construction of Parliament House in Canberra, Australia, involved the removal of the top half of Capital Hill — the mound on which the structure was built. After the project was completed, most of the displaced earth was replaced on top of the building where a lush, green lawn now grows. While much of Canberra was designed by Walter Burley Griffin in 1913, this specific complex opened in 1988 and was designed to look like two boomerangs. Parliament House contains approximately 4,400 rooms.
