New Orleans

New Orleans is the most populous city in the U.S. state of Louisiana, with a metropolitan population of nearly 1.3 million. It is located between Lake Pontchartrain (seen here at right) and the Mississippi River, approximately 105 miles upriver from the Gulf of Mexico. More than half of New Orleans is at or below sea level, and much of the city is gradually sinking, which makes it particularly vulnerable to flooding.
