This Overview shows a stretch of mountains in Abkhazia, a de facto and partially recognized republic in northwestern Georgia. Disputes over the status of this region led to the War in Abkhazia from 1992 to 1993 and remains a central issue in Georgia-Russia relations today.

It and several other docks make up the Port of Melbourne, one of Australia’s largest ports for containerized and general cargo. Swanson Dock East has a berth length of 2,900 feet (884 m), six container cranes and 99 acres (40 hectares) of container storage, while Swanson Dock West has 3,097 feet (944 m) of wharves, seven cranes and 84 acres (34 hectares) of storage space.

These Overviews show Palu, Indonesia, before and after it was hit by a magnitude 7.5 earthquake and a roughly 30-foot-high (9 m) tsunami late last month. At first glance, we notice a considerable amount of sediment and debris from the storm has washed into Palu Bay, and as we zoom in, we see more detailed damage to the city’s infrastructure, including the Jembatan Palu IV Bridge. Palu was hardest hit by the disaster, but other areas on the island of Sulawesi were also affected. The death toll has risen well above 2,000 and more than 80,000 people have been left homeless or otherwise displaced, with miles of coastline destroyed.

Mexico Beach Damage From Hurricane Michael

A week ago today, on October 10th, Hurricane Michael made landfall near Mexico Beach, Florida, with sustained winds of 155 miles per hour (250 kmh). The Category 4 storm made history as the third strongest by pressure and fourth strongest by wind speed to make landfall in the continental United States. As shown in this Overview, Michael caused extensive damage to the community, so much so that FEMA Administrator Brock Long called the area “ground zero.”

McMurdo Station
