Salt Lake City is the capital and most populous municipality in the state of Utah, with about 1.2 million residents in its metropolitan area. It was founded in 1847 by followers of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, who sought to escape persecution they experienced living in the east. As shown in this Overview, the city has a distinct north-south east-west grid system, which was laid out by church leader Brigham Young using what was called the "Plat of Zion" or the "Mormon Grid."

Ibiza is an island located in the Mediterranean Sea off the eastern coast of Spain. Covering 572 square kilometers, Ibiza is roughly 10 times larger than the island of Manhattan in New York City. Sant Antoni de Portmany, the second largest town on the island, is seen here.

Seattle Center is an arts, educational, tourism and entertainment center in Seattle, Washington. Its landmark feature is the 605-foot (184 m) tall Space Needle, an observation tower that has become a symbol of the city. Seoul is the capital and largest city in South Korea with a population greater than 25 million. Situated on the Han River, Seoul's history stretches back over two thousand years to when it was founded in 18 BC by the people of Baekje. The Gangnam District, which literally means “South of the River”, is visible in this Overview.

Sheep Meadow covers 15 acres on the west side of Central Park in New York. As seen in this Overview, the meadow often draw massive crowds of sunbathers looking for a place to lay out, and can attract up to over 30,000 visitors a day in the summer months.

Shivaji Nagar No: 1 and No: 2 are two densely populated neighborhoods in Mumbai, India. The area is home to more than 200,000 residents, primarily immigrants from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar (located in Eastern and Northern India, respectively) as well as Bangladesh who have come to Mumbai in search of a better life. The vast majority of the homes here do not have plumbing, running water taps, bathtubs, or toilets.

Shuangyu Island, also known as Double Fish Island, is a man-made island under construction in Xiamen Bay, Southeast China. Its design, which depicts a pair of dolphins circling each other, calls for roughly 8.8 billion gallons (33.3 billion liters) of reclaimed land to create. The island is slightly more than one mile (1.68 km) in diameter with about 7 miles (11.4 km) of coastline. When finished, it will house a high-end ecological resort.

The colorful roofs of Songjeong-dong - an industrial district in Busan, South Korea - are seen in this Overview. The striking colors that you see here result from the use of aluminum roofing, which is used for its low cost and longevity.

Subang Jaya is a municipality in the Greater Kuala Lumpur Petaling District of Malaysia. Before it was turned into a residential community in 1974, this area housed a rubber plantation for a major Malaysian conglomerate. It was granted municipal status in 1997 and has since grown rapidly into a global city and regional education hub.

Sun City, Arizona, USA opened as a retirement community on January 1, 1960. That day, more than 100,000 people showed up to see the new development, resulting in a cover story in Time magazine. The community was built on the old ghost town of Marinette and covers 14.6 square miles. Today, Sun City has a population of roughly 37,000 people.

Sun City, Arizona, is a retirement community and census-designated place located within the Phoenix metropolitan area. It has a population of roughly 38,000 and an adjoining sister city — Sun City West — which houses an additional 25,000 residents. When Sun City opened on January 1, 1960, it attracted a crowd of more than 100,000 onlookers and the "futuristic development" was featured on the cover of Time magazine.

Sun Lakes, Arizona, USA is a planned community with a population of approximately 14,000 residents, most of whom are senior citizens. According to US census data, only 0.1% of the community’s 6,683 households are home to children under the age of 18.

Sunglow Pier extends into the Atlantic Ocean from the shore of Daytona Beach, Florida. The pier is a popular fishing spot for visitors, with an on-site rod, reel and bait shop and a small restaurant. Daytona Beach has more than 23 miles (37 km) of white sand beaches.

This Overview captures the Sunset District — the largest and most populous neighborhood in San Francisco, California. Bordered by Golden Gate Park on its northern side, the district is home to more than 85,000 people. Sunset is often referred to as “The Avenues” because it is spanned by numbered north-south thoroughfares.

Sydney is the state capital of New South Wales and the most populous city in Australia and Oceania, with upwards of 5.1 million residents. It is made up of 658 suburbs, 40 local government areas and 15 contiguous regions covering an area of 4,775 square miles (12,367 sq. km). Located on the coast of the Mediterranean Sea, Tel Aviv is the second most populous city in Israel and is recognized as the country's financial center and a major technology hub. With a city plan dating back to the 1920’s, Tel Aviv was constructed with a hierarchical system of streets laid out in a grid and large blocks consisting of small-scale dwellings that surround central, open spaces.

As many of you know, a powerful earthquake struck the country of Nepal this past Saturday. Due to tremendous damage and fear of aftershocks, many people have moved to open spaces outdoors. Satellite images taken in recent days over the city of Kathmandu show a number of these shelters appearing across the city - like the ones seen in this Overview of Tara Goan Park. The Forbidden City in Beijing, China was built from 1406 until 1420 by more than one million workers. The palace complex, which contains 9,999 rooms, is surrounded by walls and a moat that are 26 feet high and 171 feet wide, respectively.

The Pearl-Qatar is an artificial island in Doha, Qatar, spanning nearly 2.5 miles (4 km) in the Persian Gulf. Once completed, the island is expected to have nearly 19,000 dwellings and 45,000 residents. Twelve precincts make up the Pearl-Qatar, and each one has a national or international theme — including aspects of Arabic, Mediterranean and European culture.

The World is a man-made archipelago in the rough shape of a world map, located in the Persian Gulf off the coast of Dubai, United Arab Emirates. It is made up of 300 islands ranging in size from 150,000 to 450,000 square feet (14,000-42,000 sq. meters) that are an average of 330 feet (100 m) apart. When construction of The World began in 2003, total development costs were estimated at roughly $10 billion.

With a population of nearly 790,000 residents in its urban area, Thessaloniki is the second largest city in Greece after Athens. Following a massive fire in 1917 that destroyed much of the city, large sections of the downtown area were reconstructed according to a European-style urban plan that we see on the right in this Overview.

Third Avenue Bridge passes over Upper Saint Anthony Falls on the Mississippi River in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Originally, the Falls of Saint Anthony was the only natural major waterfall on the Upper Mississippi River; however in the 1950s and 1960s, a series of locks and dams was constructed to extend navigation to points upstream. A small portion of the lock system can be seen in the bottom right of this Overview. Surrounding this area is a 1.8-mile (2.9-km) self-guided walking trail with signs explaining the area's history.

Tiki Island is a village in Galveston County, Texas, with a population of roughly 970 people. It is largely man made and was built in the 1960s, when developers dug canals and used the fill to elevate the land to between 4 and 10 feet about sea level. Street names on Tiki Island all follow a Polynesian theme, such as: Wahini Street, Lotus Drive, Coral Way and Coconut Street.

Tokyo is the capital of Japan and the most populous metropolitan area in the world, with upwards of 38 million residents. Also, as of 2014, it had the largest metropolitan economy in the world, boasting a total gross domestic product (GDP) of $1.6 trillion. This Overview captures just a small portion of the city on Tokyo Bay, with the Arakawa River featured on the right-hand side.

Toronto is the most populous city in Canada, with upwards of 5.9 million people living in its metropolitan area. It is considered one of the most multicultural and cosmopolitan cities in the world; in fact, more than 50 percent of Toronto's residents belong to a visible minority group and more than 160 languages are spoken in the city. This Overview shows several of Toronto's neighborhoods, including pieces of East York, North York and Scarborough.

Trujillo is the second largest city in Peru with slightly less than 800,000 residents in its urban area. España Avenue - the circular road that is visible at the center of this Overview - contains the city’s monument area and also traces the historic outline of the defensive wall that was constructed around the city in 1786.
