On July 12, 2017 it was reported that an iceberg — roughly twice the size of Luxembourg — separated from the Larsen Ice Shelf in Antarctica. This photograph from January shows a massive fracture in the ice that measured more than 100 feet wide and over 100 miles long at the time. It is estimated that this chunk weighs roughly one trillion tons and the break could lead to a rise in global sea levels by roughly four inches (10 centimeters).

Hundreds of dwellings - all painted in a vibrant red color - make up Larung Gar, the world’s largest Buddhist institute. The settlement is located in a remote valley in Tibet and contains a population that has grown to approximately 20,000 people since its founding in 1980. In recent years, the Chinese government has started to systemically demolish homes and force thousands of occupants out of Larung Gar, claiming the settlement is too crowded and unsafe. They have also closed off the area to all foreigners. Many Tibetans fear the erosion of their language, traditions, and ways of worship in the midst of these incursions by the Chinese government.

Huge sea salt evaporation ponds add color to the landscape of Las Coloradas, a community in Yucatán, Mexico. These ponds are part of an area that refines about 750,000 tons of sodium each year and produces six different types of table salt. The brilliant color of the water comes from salt-loving microorganisms, which serve as a source of food — and a source of pigment — for a thriving population of flamingos.

The glowing lights of Las Vegas, Nevada are captured here from the International Space Station. Since the city is entirely surrounded by desert, its brightly lit grid of streets starkly contrasts the dark, undeveloped area on its outskirts. You’ll also notice the Las Vegas Strip - the city’s central avenue that is seen at the middle of this Overview. This particular area is one of the brightest spots on Earth due to the concentration of lights emanating from the hotels and casinos along the road.

In this Overview, thousands of cattle can be seen on a feedlot in LaSalle, Colorado -- a small town roughly 50 miles (80 km) north of Denver. This particular feedlot has a capacity for 69,000 cows and is one of several owned by the largest cattle feeding company in the world. Other feedlots owned by company, located in Arizona, Idaho, Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas, have an estimated total feeding capacity of more than 900,000 head of cattle.

Today marks the 46th anniversary of the moon landing by NASA's Apollo 11. A Saturn V rocket launched the mission from Launch Pad 39A at the Kennedy Space Center in Merritt Island, Florida, USA on July 16th, 1969. That specific site is scene here. After traveling 240,000 miles in 76 hours, Apollo 11 entered into a lunar orbit on July 19. The next day, at 10:56 p.m., Neil Armstrong stepped off the ladder of the Lunar Module onto the moon’s surface and famously remarked “that’s one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind.”

Pivot irrigation fields surround a lava field known as The Cinders, in Millard County, Utah. Along with farming, one of the elements of Millard County's economy is fossil digging as Trilobite fossils are relatively common in the region west of Delta.

The Lebrija 1 Solar Power Plant in Lebrija, Spain is comprised of approximately 170,000 individual mirrors installed on 6,048 parabolic troughs. If placed next to one another, the troughs would extend for 60 kilometers.

Leimert Park is a residential neighborhood in southern Los Angeles, California. With many blues and jazz night clubs, hip hop venues, and theaters for musicals, comedy performances, poetry readings and award ceremonies, it is often considered the center of Los Angeles’ contemporary African-American arts scene.

Lido Isle is a man-made island located in the harbor of Newport Beach, California. There are no commercial facilities on the island other than a small seasonal snack bar, and its only link to the surrounding city is a small bridge. It is solely residential, with approximately 1,800 inhabitants.

Lisbon is the capital and the largest city in Portugal with an estimated population of 552,700. This Overview captures a sizable portion of the downtown area, including the green space at right called Parque Eduardo VII — a massive city park known for its exotic plants, monuments, and panoramic views of the city. Lisbon is the only capital in Europe located on the Atlantic Ocean.

Loktak Lake is the largest freshwater lake in northeast India, covering 111 square miles (287 sq km) in Manipur state. The lake is famous for its phumdis — floating masses of vegetation, soil and organic matter that are unique to its waters. The largest of the phumdis is 15 square miles (40 sq km) in size and contains Keibul Lamjao National Park, the world’s only floating national park.

The Lollapalooza Music Festival takes places each year at Millennium Park by Lake Michigan in Chicago, Illinois, USA. The event hosts more than 160,000 people over a three-day period.

Cars wind down the hill of Lombard Street, which runs from east to west in San Francisco, California. With eight hairpin turns dispersed over a one-block section in the Russian Hill neighborhood, Lombard is often referred to as “the most crooked street in the world.”

Loosdrecht is a town of roughly 8,600 inhabitants in the North Holland Province of the Netherlands. It is known for its lakes, the Loosdrechtse Plassen, which attract thousands of tourists each year. Surrounding these lakes are hundreds of peat polders — low-lying pieces of reclaimed land protected by dikes, around 4,000 of which exist in the Netherlands.

The Lop Nur Potash Ponds are located in the Taklamakan Desert of northern China. Potash, a form of potassium salt, is a major nutrient for plant growth and a key ingredient in fertilizers. The bright colors seen in this Overview occur because the water is dyed blue to absorb more sunlight and heat, thereby reducing the amount of time it takes for water to evaporate and the potash to crystallize.

This morning I’m flying to Los Angeles for a couple of days through the city’s international airport, commonly referred to as LAX. Last year, the facility handled nearly 75 million passengers, making it the seventh busiest in the world.

The Tom Bradley International Terminal, sometimes called "Terminal B," is one of nine passenger terminals at the Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) in Los Angeles, California. This terminal handles nearly all of LAX's international flights and can accommodate the Airbus A380 — the world's largest passenger airliner. In fact, LAX has more A380 services than any other North American city, with as many as 13 daily flights.

Los Caracoles Pass, or The Snails Pass, is a twisting mountain road located in a remote section of the Andes Mountains on the Chilean side of the border with Argentina. The path climbs to an elevation of 10,419 feet, has no roadside safety barriers, and is frequented by large trucks.

A river cruise passes by the Louvre Museum in Paris, France. Located on the Seine River, the Louvre is the world’s most visited museum, receiving more than nine million visitors per year. The entrance to the museum, seen at the top and center of this Overview is a glass and metal pyramid, designed by architect I.M. Pei. Visitors enter through the pyramid, descend into the spacious lobby, and then re-ascend into the wings of the museum.

The Louvre Pyramid in Paris, France, was designed by Chinese-American architect I.M. Pei, who passed away yesterday at the age of 102. The structure, which consists exclusively of glass segments and metal poles, reaches a height of 71 feet (21.6 m) and has a square base with 112-foot-long (34 m) sides. While the pyramid is often recognized as Pei’s most famous design, his firm’s other works include the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, Ohio, and the Museum of Islamic Art in Doha, Qatar.

Canola flower fields cover the mountainous landscape of Luoping County, China. The crop is grown for the production of oil, which is extracted by slightly heating and then crushing the flower seeds. Canola oil is primarily used as a source of biodiesel and is also a key ingredient in many foods.

Seafood farms cover the surface of Luoyuan Bay in the Fujian province of China. Underneath the water is a vast network of lines, cages, and nets for the growth of various seafood species including crabs, lobsters, scallops, and carp. For a sense of scale, approximately 2.3 square miles (6 square km) of the bay is seen here.

The Atocha Railway Station is the largest train station in Madrid, Spain. The facility serves as a hub for commuter trains, intercity and regional trains from the south, and AVE high-speed trains. In 1992, the station’s original terminal building was converted into a concourse with shops, a nightclub, and a 43,055 square foot tropical botanical garden.
