This melting contributes directly to sea level rise because the water that is frozen here is situated on top of a large land mass (in contrast to floating sea ice that makes up much of the rest of the Arctic ice). In this Timelapse, clear differences in ice coverage and melting can be observed at roughly the same time of year from 2014 to 2016.
